One of the best writers of our time(just my narrow opinion)

It's hard to imagine a 16 year old boy in the late 70's  waiting to get the latest Playboy magazine, only wanting to see the back side of the page that had a monthly centerfold Playmate, only to read read the latest poem or story of an author, who later became an award winning chidren's author.

While on a visit to my sister's house, I noticed some childrens books on a shelf just waiting to be read to future grandchildren. They were part of the collection of Shel Silverstein children books.

Some of his works can be found at

His writings were a big part(probably the only part) of reading for pleasure and entertainment I found growing up. So much so, I even gave my parents one of his books when I graduated college. "The Giving Tree" for helping me.

His books should be required reading to children by parents. I know my daughter got an ear full on many a night. And always wanted more.

When he was writing for Playboy magazine, he wrote a poem, which I can still quote from 35 years later.  It was a good story on the reality of life.

It was named "The Perfect High".  The last lines are still true today. You'll have to read the poem, to get the lines.(don't skip ahead)
